Girard Main Street has been created to restore and revitalize the square in Girard. We strive to use a cooperative approach, involving the community to investigate and implement strategies combining a reflection of our historical past with sound economic development strategies to move forward into our future.
Since the start of Girard Main Street, we have assisted 7 businesses with grant funds to restore the interior and exterior of buildings on the square and within a block radius. While this is an enormous boost to the aesthetics of Girard, the South and West sides of the square are dilapidated and have created an eye sore for the most historic part of our community.
Our Girard Square project encompasses three empty lots with a size of 104’x180’ for a Main Street development. The area would include a pergola with electricity for entertainment, up to 6 small building locations for start-ups, play equipment and a common consumption area to be enclosed during events. This area will have similarities to a pocket park accessible to the general public to prevent overdevelopment and improve the aesthetics of the square. It can enhance and strengthen the local character, make communities safer and more sociable, and protect the historic landscape around the Crawford County Courthouse. Additionally, this space can enhance cognitive function and attention for office workers and reduce stress.
Any support received for Girard Main Street will support the development of the square project and updates on historic buildings.
